The big story on the internet today
is the fact that my Songs From Treme project, where I post songs from Treme, has exploded in popularity. Thanks to links from respected organizations like Slate, New York Magazine, and Village Voice, as well as a twitter frenzy and tumblr reblogs (chiefly, superfan Tragos, who got in on the ground floor), I’ll likely have more visitors to the Treme blog in one day than alexwhines has accumulated in its lifetime. My mom is pretty proud.
Like a peanuts and nougat chocolate bar, the lack of a Treme tumblr was an obvious market inefficiency. And I deserve credit for recognizing it before the competition, but I’m not at all qualified run a blog about New Orleans music. I don’t even have HBO (and haven’t seen episode three yet). I’m getting by entirely using HBO.com’s tracklists that they post every Monday morning, and an emusic account.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people talking about the music from Treme on the internet though. Here are a few good ones I’ve come across:
- NPR’s A Blog Supreme is doing music-focused recaps of each episode, with Patrick Jarenwattananon with Josh Jackson. Treme’s co-creator, Eric Overmyer commented on the most recent post.
- Matt Sakakeeny, a musicologist at Tulane, is also doing weekly music analysis at Sound of Treme. Dude obviously knows his shit.
- Nola.com has all sorts of Treme coverage, most useful is their Treme Explained series, with extensive notes on each episode, including boatloads on the music. Dave Walker is writing them.
- Ben Collins is recapping the episodes for mtv news.
Am I missing any I shouldn’t be? Anyways, I wrote this mostly so I could link to it on the Treme blog, because that venn diagram needs a bigger audience.
